(04.01.2007) Young people in Norway are also involved in Red Cross activities that are not administered by the Red Cross Youth.
The Children’s Red Cross
The Children’s Red Cross’ goal is to give an exciting offer to children who don’t have the opportunity to participate in other, often costly, organized activities. In this way the children’s groups can become an important preventive measure in the local community. The Red Cross volunteers can for instance take children who live in krisesentre to activities like swimming, excursions, football, cinema, theatre, etc.
Holiday for All: Good holiday experiences for those who need it the most
A child’s first experience of growing up in a family with weak economy is often that the family never has the funds to go on vacation. This experience is not just painful in the moment – it sticks with the child who way too early sees that there are differences in society. You can assist on our vacation trips and give children and families a needed vacation.
Homework Help
The Norwegian Red Cross offers homework help to children and youth who don’t receive the help they need at home. A little extra help and inspiration can do a lot for the pupil’s progress, self confidence and future.
The Red Cross Helpline for Children and Youth
Every year about 150.000 children call the Red Cross helpline for children and youth. This says something about the lack of adult contact children and youth experience. The Red Cross helpline for children and youth is nation wide and operated by about 500 volunteers.
The Rescue Team: Ready to act on short notice
The voluntary organizations are the spine of Norway’s land and coast rescue service (land- og strandredningstjenesten i Norge). The rescue service is coordinated by the police and it is also the police which call the rescue teams to action. With 13.500 members divided by 320 rescue teams, the Norwegian Red Cross Rescue Team is by far the largest voluntary rescue organization. Age limit?
Visitors
Thousands of Norwegians are lonely. They miss someone to share their happiness and sorrows with, and often feel isolated. At the same time loneliness has become a taboo. The ideal is to have many friends and a broad social life. As besøksvenn you get to have contact with people that for various reasons want someone to talk to. Besøksvennene only visit the ones who ask for it.
Refugee Guide
New country, strange language, different culture and new people. These are some of the challenges refugees face. The Norwegian Red Cross cooperates with the municipalities to establish contact between refugees and the local population. A refugee guide’s task is to inform a refugee about the society he has come to live in. You work as a link to the local community, helping in the integration process.
Red Cross Networking
Red Cross has various projects for earlier drug users, mentally ill and earlier prisoners and their children. The Red Cross will be a door opener, creating new, positive networks for the users.
Stop the Violence
Violence is acts that violate human dignity. Safety from violence is one of the most important individual rights in a society. Stop the Violence’ main goal is to develop suggestions for good projects and solutions, empowering local groups to do awareness raising and activities that can limit violence.
Visitors - prison
Red Cross visitors shall be a support to inmates in prison who need someone to talk to. There is a lot of loneliness behind prison walls and a visit from the Red Cross can be a welcomed change in a monotonous prison life. The core of the visitor mandate is the trustful conversation, and the visitors always meet the inmate with respect. Age limit 25 years.
