Asia Pacific is also highly vulnerable to large-scale, devastating disasters. Every year, millions of people are affected by natural hazards such as earthquakes, tropical storms, flooding, landslides, tsunamis, drought epidemics and volcanic eruptions.

Regional story – North Korea
Bad harvests and political sanctions impact North Korea’s ability to feed itself. High rates of malnutrition and food insecurity levels of close to 40% (UN), have a detrimental effect on health, specifically child development.
The Red Cross Movement has tackled the hunger crisis by investing in livelihood projects and food production. In South Hamgyong, Red Cross volunteers are now able to successfully grow vegetables in greenhouses all year round. This food is given to vulnerable community members such as the elderly and nursery school children.

Safe schools for children in conflict zones.
Violence keeps an estimated 25 million children out of school in Pakistan. 105,000 students in 218 schools in the north east learned how to protect themselves when faced with an attack.
